Breathless Rumors in the Ether

Ellie, have people been sending you chain emails? I usually don't pay much attention to them unless they require some action on my part. Then I check Snopes.com to see if I should be paying any attention at all.

Now your first one on the cell phones is an oldy but a goody - though I'm afraid it's false. At least the cell phone part. There is a National Do Not Call Registry but it only works for land lines. It's run by the Federal Trade Commission, which may or may not be a reputable organization but they are spending your taxes. I am curious about the number you gave. Who answered?

The second one is true but might not be the panacea for identifying an injured person. Read the article. Paramedics probably won't and shouldn't be spending their time fiddling around with a victim's cell phone. That's why I put my name on my underwear.

My personnal favorite is the Save Sesame Street one. I seem to get it just about every year. The best part of the story is that it has been floating around the web for over a decade and still asks people to respond to some college student's email address that is inactive. Even better, Congress actually got a cut to PBS through committee a couple years back but it was defeated on the House floor. So sad.

Also, here is a useful graph:
