Larry Visit
Hi Larry:
I was just wondering if you were still coming out here. That's great for us. I'll die if we don't have the lighthouse finished by then. Either Oakland or SFO. Oakland is closer but if you feel the SF flights are better connections then that is fine to.
Sounds great!

Hi everyone from sunny California:
We are doing well. Still plugging along on the construction of everything. We get a bit down every once and a while, wondering if it will ever end. There are so many things we would rather be concentrating on. But we have a place to live and get paid so . . .
We take the little power boat out every Friday which is our joint day off. A couple times up the Napa River, once to Sam's in Tiburon and some times just cruising around our end of the Sacramento River. Just up the river about 20 minutes is what the call the 'Moth Ball Fleet'. I think there is really an official name like 'Emergency Reactivation Fleet', or something like that. But everyone calls it the Moth Ball Fleet. It is where war ships go when they are out of service. There are over 100 of them tide up side by side in groups of 10-15. Apparently, if needed to go into service they could be ready within 3-5 days. Some work is done on them but mostly they just sit waiting for the day they may be needed again. The 'Ole Miss' (Missouri) is there, which is where the treaty with Japan was signed to end WWII.
We went to some dinner at some old friends the other night. We knew 2 of the couples from years ago so it was great to catch up. They had invited a 3rd couple because they were sailors and thought we would get along. It's always a small world. The younger lady had lived in SLC for 8 years and her brother and mother live there still. Her mother teaches English part time at Westminster for the past 8 years. Her name (the mom) is Jane Cheney (no relation to Dick). Just wondering if Charley & Lynne have maybe met her. Never know!
Take care, ya'all.
Love,
Max

Hi everyone-
We are back into the school life!
Marisa started middle school- and is very excited. She was one of the few kids that has figured out how to open her locker and set up the locker shelves- so she is very proud of that accomplishment.
Megan started high school and seems thrilled with all that it will be. She has all of her Cosgriff classmates to fall back on and strengthen their friendships -but is already meeting new kids, too. She loves her teachers- they are all very cool.
It's exciting to see both of the girls in new beginnings.
I am excited for my year as well- with the opportunity to get more involved in the counseling part. The counselor and I have been trying to mesh schedules and have been discussing what we'll be doing- it's going to be great.
Duane is very sad to see summer come to an end- more than anyone. He loves the days of summer and all of us relaxing more.
We're still plugging away at the remodel- don't ask me when it will be finished...
Speaking of social security- so glad to hear all of your comments regarding- It's good to understand it a little bit better.
Mom, Dad and I participated in the Lung Study last Friday. Our contribution to science. The research coordinator said he's interested in the siblings' participation when here in Salt Lake if possible- it's an interesting study.
Love, Kay

Social Security
Do you ever receive a "Social Security Statement" in the mail?
Every so often, we receive one for George or myself. Very official government stuff. I don't have a clue. It lists estimated benefits and earnings records since the day we started working, a few decades ago. Do I really have to verify with my paycheck stubs and tax records? It says to keep for my records.
What do I do with this? Have you ever seen one?

school has started
We survivied the first week of school.
James is in the first grade. He "knows everything he needs to know for first grade and he doesn't have to go." He is not happy with longer days, homework, uniforms, shorter recesses. He doesn't want to be at this school. He wants to go to another school. Life is tough when you are seven years old.
Davis is in the third grade. He loves his teachers. He likes school. He agrees the work is harder. He loves being with his friends. He knows the drill and is doing very well.
Two boys in one school, all day. This is a big change. It is the first time in nine years. I'm working harder on the details at home. I'm still working a few hours for the church music department. The first week, the vaccuum broke and the computer modem burned out. Oh well. I was a little weepy the first day. They look so grown up. I watch the clock most of the day, habit. I'm walking every morning with the dog. I've been taking care of doctor appointments for me. When you get older, they want you to have more checkups and tests.
George starts his class tonight at the community college. He takes it all very serious. I am very proud of him.
So, life is good.
Love,
Ellie

Werlings
Mom & Dad - you're speech about Pat & Dick was gorgeous. As always perfectly written. I'm sure they could see you writing it, Dad, when Mom was saying it. It brings back memories of Crestview Drive. Wish I could have been there.
Love you,
Max

my 1/2 marathon
My chance to brag a little bit...
I ran my 1/2 marathon- Provo Riverwoods Trail - on Saturday. I completed with time of 2:01.16.
33rd out of 84 women in my age group (41-44). It was a nice downhill run- down Provo Canyon, cool temperature, shady and fun. I felt strong and enjoyed it.
In many conversations on our long runs with my group, it's been discussed the lessons we learn as we run away the miles, the feelings of accomplishment when we finish, and the strength we feel within- which overflows to the rest of our lives. It sounds a little silly- but it pushes me to do that little bit more and to find that I could do it- that it was within me all along- I just hadn't tapped into it.
...just a little running philosophy. Have a great day.
Love, Kay

Genetics of Smoking and Lung Disease
Hi everyone-
Speaking of lung disease/nicotine addiction...
I have come across a study that is being done at the University of Utah by the Pulmonary and Genetics Departments. I saw it advertised in one of the freebie magazines (Utah Health) you pick up in the entryways of businesses (remember, Ellie- when we went out for ice cream). Well, it is a full page ad called: Genetics of Smoking and Lung Disease.
It reads:
You are invited to participate in a study of genetic and non-genetic factors that may affect the development of nicotine addiction and health problems related to smoking.
I called the phone number and talked with a person about what's involved. He thought our family would fit for the family study. He is going to call me again this week to talk further about it. It seems very interesting to me to understand if there are genetic factors related to smoking. Hopefully, at some point there will be a better understanding of this. Our family certainly has the factors to contribute towards this research. Duane and I (they want spouses, too) have made an appointment for August 19th to participate. Mom and Dad have indicated their interest as well. They are also going on August 19th. I talked with Charley and he seems interested and is going to follow-up. Anybody else interested- can participate when in town over the holidays or visits.
Here is what's involved:
One visit- approximately 3 hours total.
Complete a survey on the computer- approx. 45 minutes.
Interview- approx. 30 min. (unless you have a lot to talk about)
Pulmonary Function Test (if you've never done this before- it's just a breathing test into a tube/machine- takes about 5 minutes or less)
Blood test
CT scan- they don't ask everyone to do the CT scan- likely if PFT is not normal. Some are asked to do it even if PFT is normal.
Compensation: $50.00 per visit. If you are asked to come back and do the CT scan- that's another $50.00.
If they are still doing the study for years to come- the grandchildren can participate once they turn 18 years old.
Here's the number if you have other questions: 801-581-LUNG (5864).
With all of ongoing and recent intensity in regards to the harmful effects of smoking/nicotine addiction- it seems fitting to help contribute to any research and further understanding of this disease.
Love, Kay

Things
Hey Dad - I remember that camping trip with Mary Anne Dodd! It's great to get up in the mountains, isn't it? Soooo beautiful.
It's great Mom et al are getting up to BC for the Werlings big bash. Please pass on Whitey's and my best wishes and congratulations to them.
And I have to say that hearing about Peter Jennings (of ABC) death from Lung Cancer has me thinking of my many family members who are still smoking. It is not too late to quit. The pain and discomfort you will go through by quitting is nothing compared to what you will go through if you get lung cancer or other smoking related diseases. Please quit now!
Love you all,
Max

from Kay
Hi everyone!
Ellie, it was great to have you visit for so long. We wish that our remodeling and construction would have been completed for a little bit more comfortable accomodations...
Speaking of our construction- it is underway again- and very noisy. With the next door neighbor's construction and ours- it's going to be very, very noisy around here.
Megan swam in the State Championships this past weekend. She had not qualified for any individual events but was asked to swim on three relays. Relays are fun because they're working as a team and the spectators enjoy cheering them on. She swam very well and her times helped the team.
Marisa started back with some band classes at school- playing her flute.
I start a new class this week. I just keep plugging along.
I finally found my results on the 10K (thanks, Dad)- my time was 52:38- a little less than a minute slower from my last 10K in 1997. It was still a decent time.
Duane has been busy working the deals- and his fun in with us and his buddies (they have been doing some very long mountain trail rides- which they love).
Well, summer is towards it's end-auugh- and we haven't done everything on our list...
Love to everyone-
