Happy New year
Hi everyone:
We are back in the land of fun and sun. We had a great week with everyone in Utah. Very hectic I know but heaps of fun. And we are now condo owners as well. Whitey ended the day with a horrible cough and head cold. He slept well last night but we will see if we end up going to the 2 New Years Parties we are invited to.
He is also still deciding about going to Australia or not. Freda is doing very well. The full check up they did on Thursday shows that they got all of the tumor and it has not spread further. So no chemo or radiation is needed. She is feeling very well and should be sent home on the 2nd. Her and Alan will have alot of assistance once they are home. So we are feeling it is not as an emergency and will decide what to do.
Ellie- I think most paperwork you keep for 7 years. That's in a corporation at least so maybe less for individuals. Ask a tax accountant. I know you probably do your own taxes but you may want to talk to a tax accountant as they may help save you some money and time. Like what paperwork to save for possible rightoffs you will have from improvements of your home over the years. Also, since George is working out of home, you may be able to right off an office space. But there will be stipulations such as if it is a 'dedicated' space just for his work. And when you sell the property the office write off may, or may not, benefit you. Charley could help you since he would be doing that for his business. But again, ask a tax accountant.
Pay Stubs - keep for 1-2 years then toss.
Your warranties and instruction manuals- only keep if they are still in effect. Then toss them.
Good luck - sounds like a fun job for the new year. You'll feel better once you are done.
Love - Max

paper
Help! I need your advice.
I am drowning in paper. I keep hard copies of everything. I have old (very old) payroll stubs. I keep all statements from banks, investments. I'm paranoid that when we retire, I will have to prove all our deposits for many years. I keep warranties and instruction booklets. I keep receipts of big purchases. Do we really get to write off household repairs when we sell our house? That may be a while.
How much do I really have to keep?
This is driving me nuts, but I can't throw (shred) anything.
Help!
Ellie

Nothing, really
Hey-
Today we went skiing at PC. The group included Max, Whitey, Gwen, Luke, Charley, Duane, Kay, Marisa, and Megan (me). The pow was great, a little icy at spots, but otherwise awesome. It was really crowded though.
Have you heard of the movie Nacho Libre? Here are some clips from the movie. It's hilarious!
The new year is coming up. Have you made your resolutions yet?
Have you seen the movie Hotel Rwanda? You may be surprised to learn that genocide like what occured in this movie is happening right now.
Megan :D

Christmas
Isn't it a great night! James sang with the Youth Choir this afternoon and it was beautiful.
Alas, Davis has a fever and has been on the couch all day.
We will celebrate Christmas morning at our house and then go to dinner at Matt and Nancy's house.
We'll be thinking of you all. We love you.
Merry Christmas,
Ellie, George, Davis, James

Christmas is coming!
Davis has a loud case of the giggles. James can tell you exactly how many days until Christmas. We haven't got our tree yet, but soon. I just hope we make it until Friday. I can't believe the teachers are still requiring homework and tests.
I'm sad we will not be in Utah with everyone. Christmas is the only day that I miss snow. James will be singing on Christmas Eve. We'll be thinking of you all.
Love,
Ellie

can you say 'Condominium'?
Hi everyone:
In case you have not heard, we have made an offer which was accepted to purchase a condo in Sandy, Utah. After looking at alot of homes in Sugarhouse/Liberty Park area, we decided this was the best deal for our needs. It's a good price, can be rented easily, and won't require the maintenance needs that an older home would. We're excited about it all. Just finishing up the financing, inspection and should close on the 27th when we are in Utah. I think it will be easier for George and Ellie to check on it than anyone else since it is sooooo far south. Seriously, we're hiring a property manager so all should be easy.
So we are extending our vacation and will stay until the 29th. Finish business easier and have more FUN with everyone.
Love ya all and hope you are having a Merry, Merry month.
Love,
Max

Confession
Sometimes when I drink too much rum I put my underwear on my head and talk like a pirate. Anonymous
Just the other day I noticed my underware has " LARRY" written on the band? Pretty wierd hey! The Pirate graph should reflect the good harvest years for the RUM tree in direct proportion to the average SNOW DAYS observed in pirate school. You will notice that the temperature (internal ) rises considerably after you drink a whole bottle of RUM. Even more so when consuming this bottle while killing and pillaging. Excersise is good for your health.

Underwear And Other Things
I put my name on my underwear so I can tell it apart from Lynne's. I don't know how to program my cell phone. I'm just going to disappear like Everett Reuss anyway...just me and my donkey wandering endlessly in the wilderness. I think with global warming causing an 'enlargement' of the oceans we'll be seeing an increase in the pirate ranks again. Charley
Breathless Rumors in the Ether
Ellie, have people been sending you chain emails? I usually don't pay much attention to them unless they require some action on my part. Then I check Snopes.com to see if I should be paying any attention at all.
Now your first one on the cell phones is an oldy but a goody - though I'm afraid it's false. At least the cell phone part. There is a National Do Not Call Registry but it only works for land lines. It's run by the Federal Trade Commission, which may or may not be a reputable organization but they are spending your taxes. I am curious about the number you gave. Who answered?
The second one is true but might not be the panacea for identifying an injured person. Read the article. Paramedics probably won't and shouldn't be spending their time fiddling around with a victim's cell phone. That's why I put my name on my underwear.
My personnal favorite is the Save Sesame Street one. I seem to get it just about every year. The best part of the story is that it has been floating around the web for over a decade and still asks people to respond to some college student's email address that is inactive. Even better, Congress actually got a cut to PBS through committee a couple years back but it was defeated on the House floor. So sad.
Also, here is a useful graph:

In case of emergency
"In Case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign has been launched worldwide. The idea is to store the word "ICE" in the address book of mobile phones with the name and phone number of the person that should be contacted in the event that the cell phone owner is injured and unable to communicate this information. For more than one contact name and priority, use ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc. It's that simple.
Most people carry mobile phones, but research shows that more than 75% of people carry no details of who they would like contacted following a serious accident. With "ICE" first responders and hospital staff will turn to a victim's mobile phone address book and know immediately who to contact. When seconds matter, this information may be vital. For example, the emergency contact may be able to provide critical information about the victim's medical history. Research also suggests people may recover more quickly from the psychological effects of their loved one's injury if they are involved at an earlier stage in the emergency.
Please think carefully about the "ICE" contact, especially when minors may be involved and this person has to give consent for emergency medical treatment.

Do Not Call Registry
All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sale calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS. To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222. It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years.
